Dachshunds we know now originated in Germany over 400 years ago. The Germans developed a hardy small dog with short legs to hunt badger, fox and rabbit. Their build and fearless spirit was suitable for going underground, fitting into narrow burrows after prey.

The Dachshund name is derived from two German words, dach meaning badger and hund meaning hound.

Smooth hair dachshunds first appeared in England in 1840. Queen Victoria was known for her love of dachshunds. With her interest in the breed the first dachshund dog show was in 1859 and the dachshund became very popular in the U.K.

Dachshunds first arrived in the United States in 1870 and by 1895 the Dachshund Club of America was established. During the first World War being of German origin the Dachshund went out of favor. By the efforts of dedicated breeders the dachshund is now one of the most popular small dogs in America.
